Grandcare in North Carolina

These statistics pertain to grandparents of all racial groups who are the sole caregivers for their grandchildren.

  • Most are in their 50s.

  • Over 40% are below poverty level; another 15% are near-poor.

  • About 44% are working for pay as well as raising grandchildren.

  • About 58% are African American, 40% are White.

  • About 77% are raising one grandchild; almost a quarter of these are under two years old, though children of all ages are represented.
